Government provides $4m for FIFA Women’s World Cup bid
The Matildas are one step closer to hosting the 2023 Women’s World Cup after the federal government confirmed it will provide $4 million for formal bidding.
There had been no guarantee the earmarked money would be forthcoming given FIFA’s intervention in the nasty public spat between Australian football’s stakeholders.
But the government announced in Canberra on Tuesday it will top up its initial $1 million offering so Football Federation Australia can begin formalising the bid process.
